The Early Years

A Maryland girl with a theater degree

Walter was born on August 3, 1963, in Silver Spring, Maryland. Her father was a British-born geophysicist of Alsatian descent, and her mother was a Sicilian-American public school teacher, so a love of science and education was always part of the household. She has an older sister, Laura Marie Walter.

She studied theater at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., graduating in 1983 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. By the late 1980s she had found her way onto comedy stages, and the stand-up circuit became her training ground.

Career Highlights

Television, film and a talent for producing

Her small-screen break came in the mid-1990s with My Wildest Dreams, followed by Life's Work in 1996, a series she helped create and starred in. On the big screen, she became a family favorite as Chessy, the warm and wise housekeeper in the 1998 remake of The Parent Trap.

More movie roles followed, including Debbie in Bruce Almighty (2003), Bobbie in Shall We Dance? (2004) and a part in War of the Worlds (2005). Behind the scenes, she created and executive produced the reality competition Dance Your Ass Off, which also had her in the host's chair.

In 2011, she added author to her résumé with the comic memoir The Best Thing About My Ass Is That It's Behind Me. She also hosted a weekend radio program on Los Angeles station KFI that same year.

The role that changed everything

Since 2021, Walter has played Melissa Schemmenti, the tough, funny and fiercely loyal veteran teacher at the center of the ABC mockumentary. The ensemble took home the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series in 2023, and the show also earned a Peabody Award that year. The cast has been nominated again since, and fans online regularly name Melissa as a favorite.

In 2024, she added another win to her list by taking the title on Celebrity Jeopardy!, proving her quick wit is not just for scripted lines.

Family and Relationships

Mom of four, and proud of it

Walter was married to actor and producer Sam Baum in the 1980s, and they divorced in 1999. Together they have four children: Jordan and Delia Baum, and twin sons Spencer and Simon Walter, born in 2000. She has often spoken about motherhood, and parts of her comedy draw on family life.

She is also known for a long friendship with actress Elaine Hendrix, and she has used her platform to speak up for workers' rights, women's rights and the challenges teachers face.
